A blend of 80% Negroamaro and 20% Malvasia Nero from the very far southeastern corner of Italy. It’s a sister to the Aglianico I blogged about last week; also a Trader Joe under-$10 bottle. This is the 2009 vintage; I’m having it with stir-fried skirt steak, onions, and brown rice.
Color: dark reddish-purple, almost like the skin of a Bing cherry
Aroma: cherry and spice, then some berry fruit underneath that
Taste: a nice feel up front, good fruit with some heft on the tongue. Has very good length for an inexpensive bottle, and the flavor complex stays balanced throughout. Berry fruit, some jamminess and spiciness, medium tannins that are never jarring.
This is an excellent deal – highly recommended and it deserves a place in your cellar.
